Pablo de Leon: Update on 2003 activities
The "Gauchito" is a hybrid (liquid oxygen, solid plastic fuel) vertical takeoff / parachute landing system manned spacecraft. Aerodynamically, the ship is modelled after the Apollo Little Joe system that was designed to flight test Apollo space capsules in the 1960’s. The ship is designed for launch from the coast of Southern Argentina (Patagonia) with the booster and crew capsule recovered separately after water landing.

During 2003 the team completed several important tests and accomplished important objectives. All pressure suit tests and life support systems were completed, with excellent results. During May, June and July 2003 hypobaric chamber tests, and thermal chamber tests were accomplished. The pressure suit system was also test flown in several glider flights, to test piloting skills while using the suit. The first half-scale flight vehicle made its maiden flight in June 2003. Although the vehicle failed in flight, this test was very important to learn about transportation, logistics and launch operations. The results of the mishap investigation will allow us to correct the design for the upcoming tests.

During 2004 the team will concentrate in launch test of at least two half-scale vehicles and in launch operations. Several hybrid static firing tests will also be performed. Construction of a full scale capsule will begin in July 2004. This capsule will be used for training, simulation and to study mating/de-mating techniques.
