The X-Prize was a $10M award for the first
private space engineering team or individual to succeed in transporting
three humans or their equivalent mass to height 100km above the Earth's
surface and return safely, repeating the journey within 14 days without
any more than a 10% replacement of spacecraft structure. That is, the
X-Prize was an award for the demonstration of a re-usable form of
transport, like conventional aircraft, where the only replaced component
was the fuel. The X-Prize was won by Burt Rutan's "Scaled Composites" team, on October 4th 2004. When the X-Prize competition was in progress in the years prior to 2004 there were 26 teams from numerous countries, though the majority of them, as you would expect, were based in the USA. Click on the list below to read an analysis of the individual teams, from the information they posted in their team briefings to the X-Prize site and on their own web sites. In a few cases there is extra information from personal communications. There is also a comparison table, here, which shows the state of play up to the ending of the competition. |
