     Waiting for progress

The EARL ProjectThe EARL-D4 has been ready to fly on its first test flight since February. We are waiting for a permit from the Romanian Civil Aviation Authority, which we hope to receive in a few weeks' time. We should then be able to do the series of four test flights next Spring.

It is a new experience for all of us involved in this project. Its a new kind of launch vehicle, and that is what is causing the delay in obtaining a permit to fly it. We need one, for sure, because the EARL-D4 is beyond the realm of most amateur rocketry. In aviation terms, the authorities had trouble deciding whether to think of it as a glider or as a rocket. It has a rocket motor but it has aerodynamic properties. It can glide - not very well - but it can glide.

In developing the EARL-D4 a 120 mm diameter rocket motor was designed, built and tested. That motor, which can generate 750 kg of thrust for 6 seconds has other applications, too, and we will make it available for sale. The project would benefit from some income.

Also, here in the UK, Spacefleet Ltd is setting up, in a small way to do some propulsion research, with a pulse detonation rocket motor. The motor has considerable potential if we can develop it into a flying version.

So, as you can see, the project is still live. Watch this space...
